Is SceneMill really free?
Yes. You may download and use it free of charge, privately and commercially. There is no watermark, no trial period, no account and no paid version. The videos you make are yours. The details are in the terms.
Why does Windows warn me about the installer?
Windows shows “Windows protected your PC” for programs whose installer carries no code-signing certificate, and SceneMill's does not carry one yet. The warning says nothing about what the program does.
To install anyway, choose “More info”, then “Run anyway”. Download the installer only from this website. If you want to make sure the file arrived unchanged, compare it with the SHA-256 checksums.
What does my computer need?
Windows 11, 64-bit. SceneMill is built and tested there. Everything it needs comes with the installer; nothing has to be installed first.
There is no version for macOS or Linux at the moment.
Which files can it open and export?
It opens the usual video, picture and sound files, among them MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, WebM and WMV; PNG, JPEG, WebP, BMP and TIFF; WAV, MP3, AAC, FLAC and OGG.
It exports MP4 with H.264 or H.265, WebM with VP9, and animated GIF, from 720p to 4K and in vertical formats, with ready-made settings for YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and others.
Does SceneMill upload my videos?
No. Your media and projects stay on your computer. SceneMill has no account system and sends no usage statistics. It contacts this website for two things only: to ask whether there is a newer version, and to send a problem report when you ask it to. The privacy page has the details.
How do updates work?
When SceneMill starts, it asks this website whether there is a newer version and offers to install it. From version 1.0.4 on it fetches only the files that changed, usually a few megabytes. Windows asks once for permission, then SceneMill comes back by itself in the new version. Help > Check for Updates looks at any time. What's new lists every version.
What is the portable zip for?
For using SceneMill without installing it: unpack the zip anywhere and start bin\SceneMill.exe. The portable copy tells you when there is a new version, but it does not replace itself: you fetch the new zip.
How do the automatic subtitles work?
SceneMill transcribes speech on your own computer; nothing is sent to a service. The speech model is not part of the installer: the first time, you choose one and SceneMill downloads it from huggingface.co.
Something does not work. What now?
In SceneMill choose Help > Report a Problem and describe what happened. You can attach a picture of SceneMill, screenshots or a short video, and you see word for word what is sent before it leaves. Every report is read.
How things are meant to work is on the how-to page.
How do I remove SceneMill?
In Windows: Settings > Apps > Installed apps > SceneMill > Uninstall. Your projects and media are not touched.
