Importing media
Bringing files in
- File › Import Media (Ctrl + I), the Import button in the Media tab, or drag files and folders from Explorer anywhere into the window.
- Folders are read with everything inside.
- Video: MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, WebM, WMV. Pictures: PNG, JPEG, WebP, BMP, TIFF. Sound: WAV, MP3, AAC, FLAC, OGG.
The media library
- Each file shows a thumbnail, its length, size and frame rate. Move the mouse over a video to scrub through it.
- Search by name, filter by video, audio or pictures, and sort by name, newest, duration or type.
- Right-click a file to add it to the timeline, mark it as a favorite, show it in Explorer or make a proxy.
- Several selected files go onto the timeline one after another, in the order of the library.
- Photos get the length set under File › Settings › Editing › Photo (usually 5 seconds).
Proxies
A proxy is a small copy of a heavy video that the preview plays instead; the export always uses the original. When you import footage that is hard to play (larger than 1440p; HEVC, ProRes or AV1 above 1080p; 10-bit; very high bitrate), SceneMill offers Create 540p Proxies above the library. For any video: right-click › Proxy › 720p, 540p or 360p. Proxies are made in the background, one at a time.
Playback › Use Proxies for Preview switches between proxies and originals. The status bar shows which the preview plays. More in editing on a slow PC.
Missing files
If media was moved or renamed, SceneMill says so when the project opens, and its clips show a MEDIA OFFLINE slate until they are found again (export waits until then). File › Relink Missing Media lets you locate a file or a folder, or search the project's folder.
