The window and projects
SceneMill has one window. On the left are the libraries (Media, Titles, Transitions, Effects, Sounds and more), in the middle the viewer, on the right the inspector for whatever is selected, and below the timeline.
Panels
- Every panel can be moved, docked elsewhere or floated. View › Reset Panel Layout puts them back.
- View also shows and hides the Assistant, the Transcript, Scopes, Multicam and the Export Queue.
- F11 gives the viewer the whole window for a moment.
- View › Language switches between English and German (or follows Windows). The change shows after a restart.
Projects
- File › New, Open, Open Recent, Save and Save Project As (Ctrl + Shift + S).
- File › Project Settings sets the format: aspect ratio (16:9, 9:16 for TikTok, Reels and Shorts, 1:1 and others), resolution and frame rate. The format button above the viewer opens the same.
- A project points to your media where they are; SceneMill never copies or changes your files.
- File › Collect Project copies the project with all its media (and, if you like, its proxies) into one folder, for another computer or an archive.
Autosave and recovery
SceneMill saves a copy of your work in the background, every 3 minutes unless you choose otherwise under Edit › Autosave Interval (every minute, 3, 5 or 10 minutes, or off). If SceneMill or Windows stops unexpectedly, the next start offers to recover the unsaved work.
Ctrl + Z undoes any edit, Ctrl + Shift + Z redoes it.
Help for beginners
Help › Manual (F1) opens this manual. Help › Help for Beginners starts a short tour through the window with a sample clip: import, cut, title, effect, export.
